Helpful Hints

If you have recently graduated from college or will soon be and are looking for employment it is important to be prepared. Try to develop some soft skills. These are the skills that most employers are looking for these days. They are your people skills. We will look more at this more later. Be sure to be open minded when taking your internships and figuring out your long term career plans. Focusing on one particular career may lead to disappointment so it might be best to have a back up plan. And finally, make sure to network. It is important to meet as many people in the field that you are interested in as possible.

Knowing people cannot hurt your chances. Do not be afraid to ask for references.

Develop Skills

Employers are not just looking for experience and technical skills these days. They have concluded that these can be taught easily enough to their new recruits. What they are looking for are what are called “soft skills”. These are your abilities to work with other people, having a positive attitude and showing empathy. As you notice, these are not skills that you can develop like your technical skills. Some people can never acquire these skills. In order to develop these skills you should try to get jobs where you work face-to-face with people. If this is not a possibility try just putting yourself into situations where you are forced to talk with people. Also, try to be more self-aware. If you are interested in seeing how you come off at work ask some of your co-employees.

Be Open Minded

It is possible that the dream job you have in mind may not turn into a reality, so make sure that you have some experience in other fields than just that particular one. These days it is not uncommon for someone to have more than one profession throughout their professional life. A lot of employers look for students who have had more than one internship during college. Having more than one internship in different fields will grab the attention of more potential employers. It is important to get as much experience as possible. It is important to realize that no matter how hard you work at getting your dream job there are always going to be factors outside of your control that could interfere with your plans.

Network

When looking for a job it is important to use every resource at your disposal. A lot of young people these days are overly dependent on the social media sites (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.) to get their employment. It is important that job boards and employee referrals are also utilized. Career fairs and personal and professional networking are also good ways of trying to land that job. Sometimes networking and asking for referrals can seem embarrassing and somewhat intimidating but they can be your best way of getting your foot into the door.
